OLEM Cambridge Console

Cambridge – Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs

When Sir Charles Villiers Stanford designed the organ for this large Roman Catholic church, he made no particular allowance for the Catholic liturgy. When Abbott & Smith built it they created an organ similar to many from their workshop. But the organ, acoustic and liturgy are so perfectly matched that from the very outset there was an atmosphere, a sound unique to OLEM – a sound worth preserving for future generations.

In 2002, we completed a major programme of work on the instrument. A new electro-pneumatic action was fitted throughout, the console was restored and playing aids improved. A new Tuba stop was added. This acts as a telling solo register for lusty congregational singing and a thrilling cap to full organ, which was always lacking in impact at the west end of the church owing to its transept position. The style of Tuba adopted is entirely in sympathy with ethos of the organ and the Great reeds were also been improved to the same end. At some point in the organ’s history, wind pressures were increased to gain power but the pipe speech was not reset. We restored correct speech and reduced the pressure of the Pedal Organ to improve balance and tone quality.

New blowers within the organ mean that the instrument is no longer be subjected to a daily baking from the furnaces below, whose hot air was being drawn up by the old blower situated in the boiler room. The splits and cracks resulting from that have all been repaired and the whole organ made wind-tight.

In 2019, we will be removing for workshop restoration the enormous Pedal Organ chest, on which the whole division is mounted. This will be a major operation requiring the removal of some very large and heavy pipework, all from a very high gallery. We will also clean the rest of the organ at the same time.
