Birmingham Oratory Organ Case1

The Oratory Church Of St Philip Neri, Birmingham

The Church was constructed between 1907 and 1910 in the Baroque style as a memorial to Cardinal Newman, founder of the English Oratory and was designed by the architect, Edward Doran Webb. The Grade II listed church is served by the Congregation of the Oratory. J R R Tolkein, author of The Lord of the Rings, worshipped here for about seven years.

The original organ was built by Nicholson in 1909 and was subsequently enlarged by the company in 1917 and 1939. Further extensive work was carried out by Rushworth & Dreaper in 1950 and 1967.

In 1987, Nicholson carried out major rebuilding, incorporating much pipework from previous organs. The rebuild included comprehensive tonal revisions, modifications to winding and a new solid state transmission and capture system. It has 61 speaking stops, including a full-length 32ft Double Open Wood, over four manuals and pedals.
