ST MARY’S CHURCH

New II/27 organ into existing case, using pipework from a redundant 1902 Binns organ

In 1902, the famous Leeds organ builder James Jepson Binns built a new II/26 organ for the then-new Kinning Park Burgh Hall in Glasgow.  Recitals were held frequently, many of them broadcast on the radio.

In 1933, the organ was moved to the new Mosspark Parish Church, also in Glasgow.  This congregation closed in 2018, and the building is now home to Harvest Glasgow.  We were commissioned to use the pipework as the basis for a new organ to be installed within the existing west end gallery case at St Mary’s Church, Dedham, Essex.

The Binns pipework (restored without alteration) was restored and re-used, and all other components (soundboards, chests, building frame, expression box and wind system of traditional design) were made new.  The console was largely new but incorporated some parts of the Binns console for aesthetic value.
